Women can play positive role in establishing ideal society: Sonowal

By CORRESPONDENT

NAGAON, July 19 - Calling upon women to lead the society, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said that women have great potential and they can play a positive role in establishing an ideal society.

Every child feels safe with his or her mother, and like a mother who gives security to her children, a woman should be able to give security to people in the society.

Addressing a huge rally of women at Nehrubali here, Sonowal said that women should work with a competitive spirit which would help prove their calibre.

Urging the people to work for integrity and peace in society, Sonowal said the previous Congress-led government had failed to change the social atmosphere but this BJP-led government has succeeded within a short period because it believes in transparency.

The womens rally was organised under the Kanaklata Women Empowerment Scheme by the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission under the Department of Panchayat and Rural Development.

BJP State President Ranjit Dass, Union Minister Rajen Gohain, MLAs Rupok Sarma and Angurlata Deka graced the occasion.

Sonowal also paid a visit to the residence of athlete Hima Das at Kandhulimari in Dhing, and felicitated her parents with a gamosa, sarai and a citation.

Talking to mediapersons, Sonowal said that he has instructed the Nagaon Deputy Commissioner to improve the stadium where Hima used to practise as well as to improve the library and the rural library and naamghar where Hima used to go.

Sonowal said that strong determination was the key to success and Hima Das was an example. He called upon budding talents of the society to take inspiration from Hima Das.

The Chief Minister said the State Government will name Hima Das as the States sports ambassador and will give her a reward of Rs 50 lakh. The government will felicitate her at a function when she returns to the State, he said.

Naba Kanta Baruah remembered: Former President of Asam Sahitya Sabha, renowned poet and writer Naba Kanta Baruah was remembered at a function held at the Kamala Devi Todi Bhawan recently.

The function, Kabitar Din, was inaugurated by poet and Nowgong College Principal Dr Sarat Barkataki. In his address, Barkataki said that devotion was a precondition to compose a poem, but smartphones and other such items have forced the present generation to live alone without a society.

Short story writer Sibananda Kakati and Prof Muhini Muhan Deka also addressed the gathering, while poets Lalit Chandra Dutta, Thagit Mahanta, Mridu Pawan Bora and others presented their poems.

Three books released: Three books written by Prof Pradip Kumar Bora were formally released at a function held at GNDG Commerce College.
