TEZPUR, April 9 � �The midday meal system introduced in the vernacular-medium schools has adversely affected the academic atmosphere of the institutions. The teachers have to remain busy in preparing meal during the crucial teaching hours�, stated AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya while taking part in a seminar on the topic �Importance of vernacular- medium schools� organized in connection with the platinum jubilee function of the Silver Jubilee School here that concluded yesterday.
Urging the government and the Education Minister to withdraw the midday meal scheme being continued in the vernacular-medium schools, the AASU adviser further said that like in the schools under the constituency of the Education Minister and the adjoining LACs including West Guwahati and Hajo, the tiffin system should be adopted as a convenient way.
�In this regard, the role of NGO Akshyai Bhandar is commendable,� he maintained. Dr Bhattacharya added that it is scientifically proved that a child can do better in life only by taking education in his or her mother tongue.
Not only the primary schools, every vernacular- medium school including Boro, Rabha, Mising, etc, are important for ensuring all- round development in the State.
Attending the programme, Prof Madan Chandra Sharma, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Tezpur University, urged parents and guardians to educate their children only in their mother tongue, as education provided in mother tongue is much more helpful for all-round development of a child.
Meanwhile, another speaker at the seminar, retired professor of Tezpur College Prafulla Chandra Goswami, stated that there must be a connection between the atmosphere at the school and that at home, because language depends upon the environment and accordingly the children learn only from the environment.
The seminar was conducted by the Controller of Examinations of Tezpur University, Dr Bhubaneswar Saharia. On the occasion, a book compiled with 200 songs of Dr Bhupen Hazarika and translated into English by Saurabh Deka, was also handed over to the head of school.
On Saturday, in a special �guru shambardhana� felicitation programme, altogether 39 teachers were felicitated.
