Witch hunting claimed 82 lives in State

GUWAHATI, March 31 � A total of 82 persons lost their lives in incidents of witch hunting in the State between 2009 and February this year, the State government said today.

In a written reply to a short notice question by AGP MLA Utpal Dutta, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rakibul Hussain said 98 cases had been registered related to killings or attempted killings in incidents of witch hunting.

Hussain was replying on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who also holds the Home portfolio.

Kokrajhar witnessed 18 killings, followed by 11 in Chirang and eight in Sonitpur.

Altogether 98 cases relating to witch hunting were registered during this period. The maximum number of cases were registered in Kokrajhar (11), followed by 10 each in Chirang and Goalpara.

Hussain said 567 people were arrested for their alleged involvement in incidents of witch hunting between 2009 and February 2015.
