Wine lovers make a beeline for Khanapara

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 An unprecedented rush was witnessed in the wine shops at Khanapara and along the stretch up to Jorabat today, with customers forming serpentine queues from the road into the wine shops and enduring hours of wait.

Such was the rush of people seeking a bottle of their favourite liquor that the highway witnessed severe traffic congestion. There was an unprecedented number of cars parked by the side of the road, with some occupying space right up to the middle of the road.

Following the Gauhati High Courts crackdown on wine shops and bars situated within a radius of 50 metres of educational institutions, places of worship, and hospitals, nursing homes and dispensaries, etc., a large number of wine shops and bars that had registered a mushrooming growth in the city remained closed since yesterday.

This led to an abrupt shortfall in the supply of wine in the city (which has a huge demand for it) and triggering panic among the boozers who frenetically made a beeline to the wine shops near Khanapara and Jorabat many of which fall on the Meghalaya side.

I have been desperately searching for my favourite brand and finally managed to get but not before a long wait near Khanapara, a customer said.
