DIPHU, Aug 13 - Man-elephant conflict has assumed an alarming proportion in West Karbi Anglong due to the swift reduction of forest cover in the area, largely because of infringement by humans.
A herd of 60-70 wild elephants that has been roaming around in West Karbi Anglong area, is carrying out massive destruction on the fringes of the depleted forest areas. The wild elephants entered Dasbasti village under Kheroni forest range in search of fodder and terrified the villagers. The herd destroyed a sugarcane field, a house of one Bipul Das recently.
The animals also destroyed his paddy and ate away all foodgrains. The herd also damaged his bicycle and household utensils. The wild elephants often stray on to human settlements in the winter season in search of food and water, which has become insufficient inside the forests.
