BARAMA, July 3 � There has been widespread panic among the villagers residing along the foothills of Bhutan here due to the depredations caused by a herd of elephants since the past few days. According to reports as many as 11 persons have been killed in the attack of the wild elephants so far. Sources added that a mother and her two minor daughters were killed at Simaluguri village under Barbari police station on Thursday night by the herd of elephants which were insearch of food.
Sources said they were sleeping peacefully when the elephants attacked their house. They could not escape from the rampaging elephants.
The vast area including Simaluguri in Bhutan foothills under Batabari range in Baksa district are the worst-affected villages. Herds of elephants are roaming freely during night hours and have already caused havoc in the vast area. Many houses, vegetable gardens, acres of standing crops and plants have been destroyed by these wild elephants.
It is alleged by the villagers that the Forest department is still paying no heed to stop the menace. Adequate measures are yet to be taken. The terror struck people of these areas have sought immediate help from the Government.
