Water supply system in Tezpur deplorable

By Correspondent

TEZPUR, Jan 10 Though the State Government from time to time claims cent percent success in various departments, the Water Supply Department, run under the district administration and the Municipal Board here, tells a different story.

It needs to be mentioned that the water supply facility here, which has been providing drinking water to more than 20 thousand people living within 19 wards of Tezpur Municipality Board for the last 25 years, has been in a deplorable condition due to lack of proper maintenance of the department concerned. Because of this, people here are facing untold miseries during the last few days.

During the Eighties, a water supply scheme named 9 MLD Water Treatment Plant was established near Agnigar hill to supply drinking water to the people within the urban area of Tezpur falling under the TMB. The families here have been paying Rs 150 per month at the DC office to avail the facility. But this important scheme, due to lack of maintainence, is now being surrounded by weeds. However, this project under the Public Health Engineering Department of the Government of Assam is presently in a most deplorable condition, unable to provide adequate service to the people. The people alleged that even after the department concerned has sanctioned crores of rupees to develop the sector with a modernized system, this project is yet to be facilitated with the deep tubewell system, due to which it has to depend upon the waters of river Brahmaputra. More importantly, due to the lackadaisical attitude of the PHE Department people here have been consuming polluted water, because of which deaseases such as cholera and diarrhoea break out during the summer season in many areas within the town.
