MUSHALPUR, April 6 � It is a common trend in India that election candidates look for voters before the elections and the voters keep on searching for the elected candidates after the elections. Almost every candidate feels the contentment of outsmarting his voters with a pack of lies, repeated every five years. In the changing scenario, however, the voters have become quite aware of such tricks and have started outsmarting them. It is only because of the divisive sentiment of caste and creed and the role of certain middlemen from the societies that wrong candidates get elected.
There are 11 candidates each in No. 23 Dihira BTCLAC under Mushalpur subdivision and No. 28 Goybari BTCLAC under Tamulpur subdivision in Baksa for the BTC polls. Such a huge number of candidates has not only confused the voters but the candidates have also been left perplexed by the behaviour of the voters. As all kinds of rallies have been banned in Baksa, the candidates have been organising meetings from village to village with the help of their middlemen. It is quite interesting that every candidate is getting an equal response in almost every village but the fact is that the posters and banners of the candidates get changed after the departure of each candidate and new posters and banners are hung to receive another candidate to his satisfaction that his supporters have done a good job in the village. Hence the voters have been outwitting the candidates and not allowing them to read their minds. It could have been considered a good step of vibrant democracy had the exercise been carried out to compare the candidates. But in an instance of unhealthy practice posing threat to democracy, most of the supporters or middlemen of the candidates have been taking money from the candidates promising support for them from their localities or for running election offices.
The administration can take legal action against violation of the Moral Code of Conduct against certain candidates for use of money and muscle, but it can hardly check the erosion of democratic values among the voters.
