Voters can use alternative documents

GOALPARA, April 3 - The Election Commission of India (ECI) in an order dated March 31 last issued instructions and notified a list of alternative identifying documents other than EPICs (Electors Photo Identity Cards) that could be used by the voters to exercise their franchise at the ensuing general elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Talking to this correspondent, the DEO-cum-Deputy Commissioner, JVN Subramanyam said that even though the EPICs are compulsory, but the other documents for establishing identity and permitted by the ECI includes: passport, driving license, service identity cards with photographs issued to the employees by Central/State Government, PSUs/public limited companies, passbook issued by bank/post office, PAN card, smart card issued by RGI under National Population Registrar, MNREGA job card, health insurance smart card issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labour, pension document with photograph, and authentic photo voter slip issued by the election machinery, besides official identity.

Subramanyam also said that apart from other listed documents for identification of electors, regular EPICs with clerical errors, spelling mistakes will also be accepted provided the identity can be established by the EPIC or EPICs, which have shifted from other constituency and the electors find places in the electoral roll pertaining to the polling stations will also be entertained.

Further, he informed that the election machinery in the district is keeping a tab on all the political activities and he was personally supervising the preparations to ensure safety and an orderly conduct of the 2nd phase elections on April 11 in the district amidst tight security.
