Vocational training course for Jorhat Jail inmates

JORHAT, Jan 3 - Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal inaugurated �Karagoror Pora Karikor� an initiative to provide vocational training to prison convicts at the Central Jail, Jorhat.

The prisoners will be given training on different trades by the Industrial Training Institute (Jorhat) to enable to them start life afresh as a skilled person after completing the sentence in the jail.

In his speech at the inaugural function organised inside the jail yesterday, the Deputy Commissioner said that the initiative taken by the Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Department through the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training in collaboration with Assam Prison�s headquarters is expected to contribute to the growth of skilled manpower pool of the State.

�This century is the century of knowledge and skill and this programme will empower the inmates to return back to the mainstream,� Mittal added.

Central Jail, Jorhat, Jailor Sanjib Chetia said that the first batch comprising 20 convicts will be provided training for a period of three months on electrician (Domestic). Most of the trainees are HSLC passed while few had studied till class X.

Chetia said that later on training programme on other trades too have been planned. He said that skill development courses like knitting and cutting, beautician etc., for women convicts too have been planned.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhabendra Nath Bharali, Dergaon MLA, said that the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Government has a plan to empower people by way of creating skilled and employable manpower in the Assam.

Rituraj Bora, Director of Employment and Craftsmen Training, Rani Boro, Chief Judicial Magistrate , Jorhat, Moni Baruah, DIG of prisons (HQ), Rita Sarmah, Principal, Jorhat Engineering College, Shasi Hazarika, Senior Principal, ITI, Jorhat, were among those present in the inaugural function.

Central Jail, Jorhat had completed 100 years in 2011. Several freedom fighters including Kushal Konwar, Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed (former President of India) and the Satradhikar of Garmur Satra in Majuli Pitambar Devagoswami too were lodged in this jail.
