By MANASH PRATIM DUTTA

GUWAHATI, May 26 - He has never seen the beauty of this world, but dreams to achieve great success in life. His performance in the Higher Secondary final examination has given him a new ray of hope.

Rituraj Das, a student of Cotton University who is visually impaired, scored 71.4 per cent marks in the HS arts stream with 93 marks in History.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Rituraj, after tasting success despite his physical challenges, said, First of all, I would like to thank my teachers and friends. They played an important role during my Higher Secondary days.

Rituraj, who hails from Dwarkuchi village in Baksa district, stayed at Mahendra Nath Deka Phukan boys hostel of Cotton University during his HS course. He completed his schooling from Guwahati Blind School in the Basistha area.

Thanks to the encouragement and help from my teachers, I managed to get good marks in History. It has been my favourite subject and I want to do my graduation from Cotton University with History as major. My teachers, especially Hrishikarna Das and Rashmita Phukan, helped me a lot. They even took extra classes for me without taking any fee.

On his study process, Rituraj said, Due to my physical disability, my study process was different from a general student. I used to record all textbooks and lectures of my teachers. Later, I used to listen to the recordings and memorise them. My friends and family helped me a lot while doing the recording. Moreover, one of my seniors, Raju Kalita, taught me various lessons while I was in hostel.

During the HS examination, he took the help of an assistant a junior student for writing the answers while he dictated them.

Riturajs father is a small businessman and mother a homemaker. People may have some disability, but they should not think of it as a hurdle in life. We should take it in a positive way. Cotton University has a very good academic environment for persons with disability. In society, there are still some people who insult us. But, while staying in hostel, all my co-boarders and roommates helped me a lot. They never gave me a chance to think about my disability, he added.

Meanwhile, Joynal Ali, a resident of Bhaskar Nagar slum area, also secured the first division with letter marks in Assamese from Gauhati Commerce College.

I am very happy with my result. There are a lot of challenges in my locality to continue ones studies. But, I tried as much as possible to study and got this result. I want to become a businessman after completing graduation, he said.

Joynal, a member of Abhinandan Foundation India, which works for development of slum children, said, I have a dream to eliminate all social evils from my locality. I hope I will succeed one day.
