Violence spreads to new areas

RANGIYA, Aug 16 � A series of violence by an angry mob and deterioration of law-and-order situation at Udiana of Rangiya today led the Kamrup administration to impose an indefinite curfew in Rangiya subdivision till further order.

The whole incident was the fallout of a missing case of a Tata Nano driver Sahidul Ali of the locality since last evening, whose car was set ablaze by miscreants near Kaurbaha village of Rangiya while driver Ali was on his way back home after being hired on rent to a place near Tamulpur. The local people, as a mark of protest against the incident, today gathered at Udiana on NH-31 and blockade the highway obtructing movement of vehicles for hours to and from Guwahati and Nalbari side. The irate mob turned violent and set ablaze a public bus and torched a PWD wooden bridge on the Bhatkucki-Kekohati road leading to an unruly scene of sheer violence and lawlessness.

Meanwhile, the angry mob reportedly misbehaved the civil SDO of Rangiya and damaged her official car, which added to the tense situation leading the SDO and SDPO�s security personnel to open blank fire to control the mob.

Earlier also, police had to open several rounds of fire in the air to control the irate mob. Keeping in view the prevailing law and order problem, the district administration finally clamped curfew in the entire subdivision. Senior Assam Police officials including IGP (law and order), Kamrup DC and SP, besides Army, paramilitary forces, rushed to the spot. One person was held by police in connection with the incident till filing of this report.

Our Kokrajhar Correspondent adds: Unidentified miscreants attacked the passengers of an autorickshaw in the heart of Gossaigaon town of Kokrajhar district this noon as a result of which 9 persons were injured, 3 of them critically. The injured have been shifted to Dhubri Civil Hospital.

According to sources, all the 9 victims are relief camp inmates and were coming to Gossaigaon to check out the position of their houses which they had left earlier because of violence. On the way they were attacked with acid being thrown on their bodies and were also assaulted with lethal weapons. The miscreants fled the scene immediately after the incident.
