Villagers raise voice against corrupt power supply contractors

By ANN Service

GOSSAIGAON, Dec 26 - Residents of Devitila development block under Parbatjhora subdivision in Kokrajhar district have alleged that they are being harassed by contractors of the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) in the name of giving electricity connections.

A few applicants alleged that the contractor engaged for supplying power to the houses of the applicants has been collecting Rs 4,000-5,000 from each family for giving them power connections. Residents of villages like Hatikhela, No.1 Matijhora, Bedbari, etc., are now raising voices against APDCL officials for engaging such contractors.

The villagers alleged that for all kinds of jobs related to power supply connection, like installation of poles and wire connection, the contractors have been illegally collecting sums ranging from Rs 1,000-5,000.

The villagers questioned the malpractice going on despite the launch of the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a free scheme designed to provide continuous power supply to rural India.

Meanwhile, two persons of the village Pritimaya Chetry and Monpoyee Thapa have received electricity consumption bills amounting to Rs 587 and Rs 666, respectively, even though their houses are still not electrified. Both the families were surprised on receiving the bills.
