Villagers lynch alleged murderers; three bodies recovered

BONGAIGAON, Feb 27 - Police today recovered three bodies from Gargaon in Chirang district today of which two were killed by a mob. The bodies have been identified as those of Gauranga Das (50), Bipul Das (35) and Ranjit Das (32).

It may be mentioned here that Gauranga Das, headman of village Gargaon in the district, which is 170 km north-west of Guwahati and 30 km north east of Bongaigaon, had gone missing since Tuesday evening.

Three months ago Gauranga had conducted a village trial against a resident Bipul Das (35), a small farmer, for maintaining illicit relations with a local woman. Gauranga finally handed over Bipul to police for legal action.

When Bipul was brought to the police station he had openly threatened Gauranga. On this suspicion, local residents had questioned Bipul about Gauranga when he went missing and finally he admitted to killing Gauranga. Bipul named Ranjit Das as his accomplice.

When agitated local residents got hold of Ranjit, at his residence in the village, he showed the spot at the crematorium where Gauranga�s body had been buried. After the residents found Gauranga�s body, they lynched Bipul and Ranjit to death.

Till the filing of this report, the police of Bijni police station had neither detained anybody nor received report from any section. �No person has been detained in this connection and no report from any villager has been received,� Officer in Charge of Bijni police station Sailen Deuri said.
