NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 24 - Lakhimpur Police rescued a 75-year-old person, accused of practising witchcraft, from an irate mob at a remote village in Lakhimpur district on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at Na-Dola village under the Panigaon Police Station, when a group of villagers detained Danda Pegu on the charge of practising witchcraft and black magic. Panigaon Police, led by the officer in-charge, Utpal Sarma, rescued the elderly person from the mob which was about to lynch him in the village off the Subansiri river after receiving a distress call in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Pegu was later brought to the Panigaon Police Station and then taken to North Lakhimpur where Lakhimpur SP Brajendrajeet Singha initiated steps to rehabilitate the elderly villager.

Speaking to this correspondent, Danda Pegu said that he was framed by one of his nephews, who was caught stealing poultry on Monday night. It was that nephew who instigated the villagers that his uncle was practising witchcraft on him to hide his own crime.

Later, Pegu was shifted to an old age home in Bangalmara by the Lakhimpur SP.
