Village committee polls in Tripura today

AGARTALA, Feb 23 � Security has been beefed up in the poll-bound areas of Tripura which go to election tomorrow.

Polling personnels have left for their polling booths with polling materials � electoral rolls and printed ballot papers, official sources said.

Campaign for the Village Committee election in Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) scheduled to be held on February 24 ended peacefully on Wednesday.

More than 8,000 polling personnel will be engaged in conducting elections in 4,019 seats of 527 Village Committee on February 24. The ruling Left Front has already won 273 seats uncontested.

Govinda Bhattacharjee, Secretary of State Election Commission (SEC) said that all necessary arrangements have been made to conduct the election smoothly on February 24. �Full-proof security will be provided to ensure the election peacefully�, he said. However, he did not specify the classification of polling booths in security point of view.

According to police, security has been tightened in the poll-bound areas to prevent any kind of untoward incident. A team of Police, BSF and CRPF have already made an aerial surveillance by chopper. About 45 per cent polling booths of 1,468 booths have been identified as hyper-sensitive and sensitive which will be manned by CRPF or Tripura State Rifles (TSR).

�The Indo-Bangla border has been sealed to foil any intrusion bid from across the border�, said a top police officer. Altogether 6,71,163 voters are eligible to vote in the polls which will decide the fate of 8,525 aspirants in the battle of ballots. The counting will be held on February 26.
