GUWAHATI, July 1 - Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya today said a State-level vigilance team has been formed to check the menace of illegal tree felling.

Without disclosing the names of members of the team, Suklabaidya said the team besides conducting random visits to various divisions, will also follow up on public complaints.

From July 1 to 7, when we are observing the 69th Van Mahatsov week, we have instructed all divisions to conduct a survey, identify all illegal saw mills and close them down. The operators will be booked under various provisions of the law, the Minister told The Assam Tribune.

Suklabaidya said he would himself conduct visits to different divisions and ensure that the forest staff execute the directions. After July 7, the vigilance team will be also sent to different divisions for conducting surprise checks, he added.

Meanwhile, in another circular to all divisions, the Forest Minister has asked the DFOs to identify at least one village in each constituency and plant at least 1,000 saplings there during the week.

The plantation drive will be carried out in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the local public, he said, adding that the programme has been taken up in line with the Chief Ministers Clean & Green Village concept.

Earlier during the day, Suklabaidya participated in the 69th Van Mahatsov Week organised centrally at Garopara of Jarsal Reserve Forest at Rani. A massive plantation programme was organised on the occasion.
