Veterinary playground all set to host R-Day

GUWAHATI, Jan 22 � Veterinary playground, Khanapara, the new venue for the Republic Day function, is all set to host the event in a grand manner, despite the fact that the decision to shift the venue for the State function was taken only a few days back.

Sources in the civil and police administrations have claimed that ground sensitization exercise is on and forces in adequate numbers have also been deployed. The full-dress parade rehearsal will take place on January 23.

Senior Superintendant of Police (City) Apurba Jeevan Barua told this reporter that till now no hiccups have been reported as far as the preparation for the R-Day is concerned.

�Round-the-clock vigil is kept in and around the ground and all aspects, including security and comfort of the people are being kept in mind,� the SSP said, adding that the preparation is taking place on a war-footing and security arrangements across the city too is being constantly monitored.

�Officials of district administration and the police department are leaving no stone unturned to make the event a grand success,� he pointed out.

The Government, it may be mentioned, had decided to shift the Republic Day venue to Khanapara playground, after members of the civil society had opposed hosting of the event at the Latasil playground.

A senior Assam Police official, when asked, informed that elaborate security and traffic arrangements have been made for the Republic Day celebration and that the movement of both surrendered and underground cadres of the banned outfit is being constantly monitored.

On the threat percept, the official said that there is a general threat from the banned outfits which had issued a boycott call. �However, we are capable of averting any kind of untoward incidents,� he claimed.

District administration sources further informed that the intake capacity of the Veterinary playground will also be more than the Latasil playground.

�The police department has been put on general alert in view of the celebration and security has been tightened across the capital city,� the sources added. Moreover, the vehicular traffic routes leading to the ground might also be diverted, if required, the sources added.
