GUWAHATI, Dec 4 - Madhuri Sarmah, ex-councillor of GMC Ward No.26 from 2003 to 2008 and a veteran social worker, passed away at a city hospital on December 3.
She had been suffering from age-related ailments for the last couple of years, which also kept her away from active public life.
Various organisations have mourned Sarmah�s death. Her body was taken to the State BJP office in Guwahati, where party workers present there, including State BJP vice president Dr Pradeep Thakuria, paid their last respects.
Her body was also taken to Lachit Jyoti Sangha, where Bijoy Das representing the Sangha, and members of Lachit Jyoti Mahila Samiti paid their last respects.
The AJYCP, represented by central committee member Ajit Bordoloi, also offered floral tributes to the departed soul.
A popular and ardent social worker of the Lachit Nagar area, she was instrumental in establishing Lachit Jyoti Mahila Sangha and became its founder president in 1995. Later, she endeavoured zealously for construction of a naamghar in the premises of Lachit Jyoti Sangha. A committed member of the BJP, she was the vice president of the Assam State Mohila Morcha in 1997. In 2003, she fought the GMC elections on a BJP ticket and won by a comprehensive margin to serve as councillor of Ward No.26, working tirelessly and sincerely during her stint.
She also served as the president of Kamrup Sasthya Kendra and Adult Education under the Department of Social Welfare, Govt of Assam. She served as the vice president of the Ulubari College (currently SB Deorah College) management, member of BJP�s national executive body of the Investors� Protection Cell, and director of the Indoor Movie Enterprise and Gargya Motors Pvt Ltd.
She is survived by her husband, three daughters, a son, grandchildren and a host of relatives.
Her last rites were held at the Navagraha crematorium.
