Veteran actor Guna Mahanta passes away

NAGAON, Aug 27 - Guna Mahanta, a veteran actor of celluloid and stage, passed away this morning on way to a doctor�s chamber. With his death, an era of Assamese cinema and theatre has come to an end.

A resident of Nagaon who was born in 1946, Mahanta was also associated with the Sankari culture, and staged several bhaonas in the Brajabali language. To spread Sankari culture, he also formed the Purnamurti Gopaldev Kalakshetra.

Mahanta acted in many films, TV serials, as well as in radio and also on stage. He was also a writer of repute, and wrote a number of articles in various dailies, weeklies and magazines. He edited a number of books published by the Nagaon Natya Mandir and other organisations.

He was recently felicitated by Kolongpar, Asam Sahitya Sabha, Bhogali Bihu Utsab Samity and others for his contribution in the field of culture and literature.

Following his death, his body was today taken to the Nagaon Natya Mandir, Nagaon Press Club, Fouzdary Patty Kola Mandir among several other places where people paid floral tributes. His death was also mourned by Kolongpar, Sadau Asam Gramya Puthibharal Santha, Ashamiya Sahitya Sanmilani, AASU, AJYCP, Shilpi Samaj, Nagaon.

A bachelor, Mahanta leaves behind a host of relatives.
