Varun to head State BJPs poll team

By Spl correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 23 Lok Sabha MP Varun Gandhi of BJP has been given charge of elections in Assam, in the reconstituted body of office-bearers, announced by national party president, Nitin Gadkari here today.

Former Union Minister of State Vijay Goel has been made overall in-charge of Assam, while Kiran Maheswari would assist him as his Sah Prabhari.

However, it is Varun Gandhis appointment, as in-charge for Assam election that may have ramifications, given his strong views on various issues. He was in the news during the last Lok Sabha polls for his fiery speeches which forced the BJP to pull him out of the campaign trail in other Lok Sabha constituencies.

Assam, which goes to poll next year, is known for its minority politics, with even AGP and other smaller regional parties treading cautiously. AGP, which had an electoral alliance with BJP, is expected to react sharply.

Though AGP has been sending confusing signals over the state of its alliance with BJP, it may now be forced to make its stand clear, if the regional party has to keep its minority support base intact.

The news, however, is expected to make the Congress party happy, as Varun Gandhis appointment is likely to help it to target AGP and BJP.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha MP Ramen Deka has been appointed as in-charge of Meghalaya and Mizoram, while Tapir Gaon has been given charge of Nagaland and Manipur. Bijoya Chakravarty has been made in-charge of Arunachal Pradesh. Suresh Pujari has been given charge of Tripura.
