IMPHAL, July 4 � Manipur yesterday observed the Vana- mahotsava at the Maharaja Gambhir Singh�s Samadhi at Canchipur near here. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Forest and Environment Minister Th Debendra and others attended the observation.

According to State of Forest Report - 2013, the forest cover of Manipur is 16,990 sq km which is 76.10 per cent of the total geographical area of the State as compared to the all India average of 21per cent.

Speaking on the occasion, Ibobi said, Manipur Government is committed to improving forests in the State. �With climate change becoming a global issue with its serious consequences, Manipur needs to act responsibly in mitigating this issue through massive tree plantation efforts,� he added.
