GUWAHATI, Aug 21 - The urn containing the ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away recently, will reach here tomorrow.
State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass today left for New Delhi to escort the urn containing the late leader's ashes to Assam. Dass will land at the LGBI Airport here at 2.30 pm tomorrow with the urn.
The urn will be formally accepted at the airport by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the presence of State ministers, BJP leaders, MPs, MLAs and the general public.
The urn will be brought from the airport to the State BJP headquarters at Hengrabari. A huge cavalcade will pass through Dharapur Chariali, Maligaon, Fancy Bazar, GS Road and Ganeshguri with the urn.
The public will be able to pay their homage to the departed leader at the State BJP headquarters from 5 pm till 8 am on August 23 (Thursday).
A public tribute to the late Prime Minister will be paid on the Karbi Yuva Sangha premises at Hengrabari from 8 am to 12.30 pm on Thursday. The procession to immerse the urn will begin at 1 pm on Thursday and pass through RG Baruah Road, Chandmari and Latasil Playground. The ashes will be immersed in the Brahmaputra, adjacent to the Lachit Park at Bharalumukh at 5.30 pm.
Sonowal and other dignitaries will be present on the occasion. Another urn containing the ashes of the departed leader will be immersed at the Barak River on August 23.
A decision was earlier taken at the highest levels in New Delhi to immerse the ashes of Vajpayee in as many as 100 rivers of the country, including the Brahmaputra and the Barak in Assam.
