By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Feb 22 A mass convention was organised at Gandhi Bhawan recently demanding that Barak Valley be declared a union territory. People from various sections participated in this convention. The programme was presided over by Paritosh Paul Choudhury, president of the Union Territory Demand Committee (UTDC). The convention began with a patriotic song by lawyer Pinki Paul.

Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya, MLA of Katigorah said that the people of Barak Valley are till now not consciousand if they remain in that state, there will be more exploitation and harassment. People of the Bodo community people are not much in number but their consciousness level has grown like anything because in the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, nearby 5 lakh people participated. But in the Banga Sahitya Sammelan organised here, only about 1000 people were seen.

Marzarbhuiya further said that the Barak Valley is ignored in many respects adding that there is no problem in granting a Dimasa state but no land from Barak Valley can be incorporated.

In his presidential address, Paritosh Paul Choudhury said that the situation of Barak Valley is extremely grim. Everywhere there is exploitation. If the young generation gets misguided, the Central Government will be responsible. Thats why there is an urgent need for a union territory to save the people of Barak Valley. It is the struggle of the last 40 years. He further said that a team will go to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister as well as the Home Minister and to submit the memorandum.

In the convention, others who participated included retired judge Malikur Rahman Choudhury, IAS officer DK Bhattacharjee, journalist Pijush Kanti Das, Dr J K Sen etc.
