JORHAT, Nov 29 - Attending a convocation at the Kaziranga University (KU) here on Saturday, renowned sarod maestro Padma Vibhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan said that he wanted to teach music in the State and appealed the State Government to entrust such a responsibility upon him.

The best-known sarod maestro Khan, who is also a son-in-law of the State, expressed his concern over the spurt of violent incidents in many parts of the country and advised all the students to nurture the habit of respecting others as the old heritage of the country always reminds everyone to respect each other.

At a grand convocation function in KU, he was conferred honorary doctorate degree by the university authority.

Recollecting his beautiful memories of Sivasagar town, Ustad said that he has seen Assam in its most beautiful period and also visited many tea gardens of his father-in-law Parsuram Barooah and his brother PC Barooah.

However, he questioned about the practical application of the intrinsic meaning of proper education in the present-day society. Ustad Ali Khan said, Education could not convey the simple message of the world that all of us have a common God.

Education also could not create kindness, compassion in human beings. Let us hope our younger generation experience an overall education that encourages in them peace, tranquillity, success and togetherness in their life, he stated in his written speech to the students and other audience of the convocation programme.

Along with the Chancellor of the private university, MD Khetan, the Vice-Chancellor Dr Sunil Rai, Pro-Chancellor Basant Khetan, renowned economist Dr Jayanta Madhab, former Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr Nirmal Chaudhury, noted entrepreneur Shyam Kanu Mahanta and several other dignitaries were present.

ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar was also awarded with honorary doctorate degree by the university authority during its second convocation programme.
