US envoy visits Mizoram

AIZAWL, May 17 - US Ambassador to India Kenneth I Juster arrived on a two-day maiden visit to Mizoram on Thursday. He met Chief Minister Zoramthanga, government officials, church leaders and NGOs working in the fields of HIV/AIDS prevention and drugs control.

An official statement said the purpose of the US Ambassador�s visit was to get familiar with Mizoram and look into the prospects of cooperation in development projects. The visit was also aimed at reviewing US Government-funded HIV/AIDS projects in the State, which has one of the highest HIV rates in India.

On the second day of his tour today, the US diplomat visited SHALOM (Society for HIV/AIDS and Lifeline Operation in Mizoram) here. He was briefed by SHALOM chairman R Lalmalsawma, SHALOM CEO Dr Chawnghmingliana and Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) Project Director Dr Lalthlengliani on the status of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the State as well as various ongoing programmes for HIV/AIDS prevention.

The Ambassador also met people infected with HIV/AIDS to learn about their struggles and achievements after intervention by SHALOM.

Established in 1997, SHALOM is an NGO-run charity working for HIV/AIDS prevention, human rights, and women�s development and empowerment.

Later, Juster met church leaders at the Synod Office, Mission Veng, where they talked about the importance of church in Mizoram, the status of the Presbyterian church and problems faced by the minorities in India. On Thursday evening, Juster met Chief Minister Zoramthanga.
