US backs India on punishing 26/11 plotters

By The Assam Tribune

WASHINGTON, June 26 (IANS): Welcoming the arrest of Abu Jindal Hamza, a key planner of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, the United States has vowed to continue to support India's efforts to bring its perpetrators to justice.

"We are aware of these reports that one of the suspected planners of the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai has been arrested," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters Monday when asked to comment on Hamza's arrest in Delhi.

"We have a strong interest, as we've said, since the day of the attack in the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of all those responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attack because our own citizens were among the victims," she said.

"So we want to see all of them brought to justice."

Asked if the US provided any kind of assistance intelligence-wise in nabbing the key accused in the attack blamed on Pakistan based terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Nuland said she didn't have any details in this particular case.

"But as you know, we have been doing what we can to share information and support of the Indian efforts to bring folks to justice," she said.

Asked if the US was going to provide India fresh access to convicted Pakistani American key plotter David Coleman Headley as requested by Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna during his recent visit, Nuland said: "We have routinely provided access to David Headley when asked, and we will continue to make him available as appropriate."
