UPPL protests against corruption; BPF-BSU hunger strike demanding polls

KOKRAJHAR, Oct 2 - The United People�s Party Liberal (UPPL), Kokrajhar district, on Friday staged a sit-in demonstration at the Children�s Park near the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner�s office in protest against corruption in implementation of MGNREGA works in BTC region.

UPPL supporters led by vice president Prativa Brahma displayed banners and posters, and submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Governor and Chief Minister through the DC.

The UPPL demanded an investigation by a credible agency like CBI into the corruption and to penalise corrupt politicians and officials.

Brahma alleged that during the BPF regime, rampant corruption had taken place in MGNREGA works, and the beneficiaries have not been able to get the amount that has been credited to their bank accounts and the assets have not been created properly in the villages.

Hunger strike: The Bodoland People�s Front (BPF) and Bodoland Students� Union (BSU) on Friday jointly staged a hunger strike at the BPF central office at JD Road, Kokrajhar, demanding early elections to the BTC Assembly and stop extension of Governor�s Rule.

More than 100 supporters of the BPF and BSU assembled at the venue, and displayed posters and banners. Former BTC executive member Derhasat Basumatary joined the strike, and said the BPF was compelled to launch protests against the apathy of the state government towards BTC elections. The BPF and BSU also organised similar hunger strikes in different blocks of Kokrajhar district. Leaders like Doneswar Goyari, and Rajib Kumar Brahma participated in the programme.

ANN Service from Gossaigaon adds: Members of the Gossaigaon district committee of the BPF assembled at the SDO(C) office on Friday for a hunger strike against non-scheduling of the BTC election. No.28 Gossaigaon MLA Majendra Narzary, former EM Mrityunjoy Narzary took part in the hunger strike. Narzary said the strike was held on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, hoping that the government and Election Commission will declare the election date soon.

ANN Service from Mushalpur adds: BPF workers of Mushalpur, Dihira, Baganpara and Koklabari Block Committees in Baksa district sat on a hunger strike on Friday, demanding BTC election before October 27. The BPF has been carrying out protests for the last few days. The Mushalpur District Committee carried out a protest at the DC office on September 28. Another rally was carried out by the BPF women�s wing at Mushalpur on September 29.
