Upper Subansiri declared �Organic district�

ITANAGAR, Dec 23 - Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh has been declared as �Organic district� by the district administration for all agriculture and horticulture pursuits. Its basic objectives are to promote large scale cultivation of cardamom and undertake other agriculture-horticultural activities under organic environment and to put a stop on the use of all forms of inorganic pesticides and chemicals, according to official sources here.

The declaration was made keeping in view the value and marketing prospects of agriculture-horticulture produces of the district and also to prevent environmental degradation caused by widespread use of pesticides and its adverse impact on human health in the long run.

Consequent upon the declaration, the use and sale of weedicide and other forms of inorganic pesticides have been strictly banned throughout the district. It has also been ordered that all pest control activities shall undergo strict checking, monitoring and supervision by the Departments of Agriculture & Horticulture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra and other allied departments, sources added.
