By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 1 A delegation of the United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) today met Governor JB Patnaik at the Raj Bhawan and requested him to hold the elections to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Territorial Council as soon as possible.

The UPDS delegation told the Governor that the members of the militant outfit would formally lay down arms soon to come over ground . The leaders of the militant outfit requested the Governor to attend the ceremony for laying down arms.

The leaders of the militant group also informed the Governor that members of the outfit would join the political process after formally coming over ground and contest in the elections to the Territorial Council. They also said that the elections to the Council should be conducted by the State Election Commission, said Raj Bhawan sources here.

It may be mentioned here that militant group UPDS signed a peace agreement with the Central and State Governments in New Delhi on November 25 in presence of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and members of 50 different organizations of Karbi Anglong.

As per the provisions of the agreement, a Karbi Anglong Autonomous Territorial Council would be formed and the Government of India would provide a financial package for the all round development of the hill district. As per the agreement, more powers would be provided to the Council with additional departments.

However, the State Government is yet to take the decision on whether the present Congress ruled Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council would be allowed to complete its term before holding of the elections to the territorial council as demanded by the UPDS.
