GUWAHATI, April 8 - The BJPs legal cell has complained against me and my colleagues that we allegedly trespassed into their empty office and stole publicity materials. This has turned them into a laughing stock, said Supreme Court advocate and Independent candidate for the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat, Upamanyu Hazarika, here today.
Hazarika made the statement after the Assam unit of the BJP on Sunday filed a police complaint against him on charges of trespassing into one of their election offices and stealing some important documents.
He stated that he entered the BJPs election office located at Noonmati for campaigning and the entire visit to the office was video recorded and aired live on Facebook, and also covered by TV channel crews who accompanied him during the walking campaign extending from Noonmati to Bharalumukh.
The complaint records that we entered their office between 1-1.30 pm, whereas the Facebook Live screenshot attached clearly shows the time as 3.38 pm. Secondly, the video footage clearly shows that the office was empty with no publicity materials around, and that the theft charge is false. The BJP has no answer to the charge that I made at their empty office, about betraying the indigenous people, he said.
Hazarika further stated that if the BJP is opening roadside offices only to accuse visitors of trespassing, it only shows how distant the party is from the people. The BJP believes that the sole route to electoral success is money and not public support, he added.
In his statement, Hazarika further said, In the last one week, the BJP has lied and got caught twice. The first instance was their candidate for the Guwahati seat filing a false affidavit, which is enough to disqualify her. The second instance is the current complaint lodged against me in the Noonmati Police Station. These two instances expose the hollowness and incompetence of the BJP leadership. Their candidate does not even know what educational qualifications are and the BJPs legal cell convener, a lawyer, has not done his homework before filing the complaint.
