UNLF condemns wrongful detention of Meghen

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Dec 31 The central committee of the Manipur outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has condemned the Government of India for the wrongful detention of its chairman RK Meghen.

In a press statement here recently, the UNLF stated that the public needed to endorse the call for a plebiscite initiated by the UNLF as the need of the hour to bring a peaceful solution to the conflict in the State.

It said that if India truly believed itself to be a democratic nation, then the plebiscite proposal of the UNLF should not have been ignored.

The release further stated that the Indian Government was trying to mislead the public by falsely claiming that RK Meghen was arrested from Motihari of Bihar district whereas he had claimed to the media that he was arrested from Bangladesh by the National Investigation Agency on September 29.

The release further stated that Meghen is innocent as the chairman had not waged a war against the Indian nation but simply demanded the right to self-determination in line with guidelines laid down by the United Nations.

The NIA special court on December 16 had remanded the UNLF chairman in judicial custody for 14 days. Through his counsel M Guneshwor, the chairman reportedly denied the charges levelled against him.
