ULFA on recruitment drive in lower Assam

By Correspondent

NALBARI, Dec 13 Five lower Assam districts Nalbari, Baksa, Barpeta, Kamrup (Rural) and Kamrup have turned into new recruitment grounds for the hardline faction of the ULFA.

A highly-placed police source here said that security personnel have gathered information that the militant outfit has recruited 20 youths in recent days. The security personnel are on high alert in view of the fact that these newly-recruited cadres may create nuisance in these areas. The source further added that the ULFA are targeting youths belonging to poor families in their recruitment drives.

As hardcore ULFA militant Bijoy Chinese, who is a close aide of ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah, belongs to Baksa, youths in the district have come into close contact with him.

However, the police confirmed that there is no information of entry of any group of hardline ULFA militants to create disturbance.

Meanwhile, the police and other security forces in the district have intensified their operations against the militant outfit. It may be mentioned here that after the top ULFA leaders of the district foreign secretary Sasha Chaudhury, deputy commander Raju Baruah, publicity secretary Mithinga Daimari and cultural secretary Pranati Deka came to the negotiating table, the militant problem in Nalbari district has subsided.
