ULFA declares unilateral ceasefire

GUWAHATI, July 12 � The pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) today declared a unilateral cease-fire for creating a congenial atmosphere for talks with the Government of India.

In a statement here today, ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said that the 5th general council of the organisation, held on February 22 last, deliberated upon various dimensions of the armed struggle launched by the ULFA since 1979 for independence of Assam.

The meeting decided to respect the desire of vast majority of people of Assam for peaceful solution to the issues and authorized the chairman to declare ceasefire whenever required for talks with the government.

Rajkhowa said that in the interest of creating a congenial atmosphere for talks, he declared a unilateral ceasefire with effect from today. He called upon all the members of the ULFA to abide by the ceasefire and warned that any infringement would be treated as anti-organizational act and would be dealt with accordingly.

Meanwhile, the anti-talk faction of the ULFA today said that Drishti Rajkhowa has been entrusted with the responsibility of collection of funds for the outfit in the districts of Goalpara, Dhubri, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar.
