UDPs appeal to MDA partners

By Newmai News

SHILLONG, Aug 10 - The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Friday made an appeal to its MDA coalition partners not to field any candidate for the Shella by-poll. It may be mentioned that the Assembly seat has fallen vacant after the recent demise of Dr Donkupar Roy.

We appeal to our MDA partners not to field any candidates and as we are a family, they will understand, said UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh.

Pointing out that during the last Lok Sabha elections, the MDA had worked on the format of common candidates, Mawthoh said, adding that this could be done again now.

Dr Roy was a tall leader who was loved and respected by all and I think our partners will honour this fact by not fielding any candidates and only supporting ours, he added. It may be mentioned here that Dr Roy was the head of the UDP.

Asked about the UDP candidate, Mawthoh said that the UDP leaders of Shella constituency and the family members of Dr Roy have projected the late leaders son, Balajied Roy Synrem, as the candidate, and that the UDP would endorse him.

Mawthoh, however said that the candidates name has not been announced publicly yet, which would be done during the party meet slated later.

Meanwhile, senior working president of UDP, Bindo M Lanong, said that the UDP can only appeal to its coalition partners not to field any candidate and support the UDP candidate, but it cannot stop them if they wish to do so.

Late Dr Roy was considered the architect of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government in the State. He had also served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya. At the time of his demise, he was the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
