UALA C-in-C escapes using human shield

WILLIAMNAGAR, May 20 � A pre-dawn strike by police on the house of the commander in chief (C-In-C), Norrok X Momin (Singbirth Marak) led to the killing of 5 United A�chik Liberation Army (UALA) militants. One sub inspector who was wounded in the leg in retaliatory fire by the militants is recovering in the Williamnagar Civil Hospital. Police recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from the site of the incident which took place at about 4 am.

Davies Marak, the SP of EGH, confirmed the encounter saying they had prior information of the presence of militants led by the UALA C-In-C Norrok X Momin. According to sources, around 30 militants of the same outfit were present at the time of the incident, though most of them were not in the house under attack.

�The village had about 30 UALA cadres in different locations within the same village. In the ensuing gun battle, 5 militants were killed in police firing.

The encounter was led by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) of the Meghalaya police along with the COBRA battalion of the CRPF.

�Norrok was also present in the same house and he came out using a small boy as a human shield. Our police team did not fire and he escaped into the woods surrounding the house�, continued Marak. This is the 2nd instance of the UALA chief escaping police encounters. Three UALA militants were killed in the last encounter with the police.

The killed militants have been identified as Sgt Major Kalam R Marak, Corporal Dikdik D Momin, privates Sengnang Marak (Walle), Bhatnagar Marak and Kekil Marak of the UALA outfit.

The police team recovered one, 9mm pistol, three AK rifles, three magazines, nine rounds of live ammunition, 22 empty shell cases along with demand pads, among others.
