NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 30 - Two stray rhinos who have drifted away from Kaziranga National Park have been creating fear and panic among the villagers in a vast area from riverine villages to up north in Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district since Sunday morning.
The two rhinos were spotted first on Sunday morning at Lagachu Chapori in Lohit-Khabolu riverine area of Lakhimpur district. The Forest Department personnel arrived in that area and tried to push the two rhinos towards Kaziranga National Park. The rhinos however charged at them and attacked one person injuring him seriously. The victim has been identified as Poya Tayung of Sengeleesuti village.
On Monday, the stray rhinos entered Panbari and Chaudhapunia area of Narayanpur causing panic among the villagers. A team of forest personnel tried to scare away the rhinos using crackers. But one rhino attacked the forest Ranger Pranjal Kakati injuring him seriously. Later, the stray animals moved towards Jamuguri ghat of the district. Two domestic buffaloes also lost their lives in the attack caused by the two stray rhinos. According to the Forest Department, Lakhimpur one rhino is presently in Dhenu Chapori in Majuli district and the other one at Jamuguri Chapori in Lakhimpur district.
