TU V-C receives Visitor�s Best University award

TEZPUR, March 17 - Scripting history not only for itself, but also for Assam and the Northeast, Tezpur University bagged the Visitor�s Award for the �Best University� 2016.

In a function organised in the Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 14 evening, the award was presented to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri, by the President, Pranab Mukharjee, who is also the visitor of Tezpur University, in presence of Union Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani, UGC Chairman Professor Ved Prakash, Jury Members, Vice-Chancellors, Directors of IIMs, NITs and a host of dignitaries.

Interacting with the mediapersons here in a press meet held on Wednesday at the guest house of the university, the vice-chancellor said that congratulating Tezpur University, the President attributed the achievement to the hard works of the students, faculty and non-teaching staff of the university.

�Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani also congratulated the Tezpur University community for achieving such a feat in a remarkably short time and expressed hope that it would go a long way in encouraging other institutions,� the V-C said, thanking the President and the HRD minister, UGC chairman and the jury members for reposing faith in a university located at a remote part of the country.

Professor Mihir K Chaudhuri, who joined the university as V-C in 2007, sharing his experience said that nurturing as an unconventional seat of higher learning to produce professionals of high competence through innovated methods of pedagogy and world-class infrastructure, the university is now an institution of reckoning. Ever since the Tezpur University Act, 1993, started breathing on January 21, 1994, the university has been steadily surging ahead with its mission and in the recent past it has picked up momentum making it a cherished destination for students, faculty and visitors.

�Created as a residential central university, it casts its attention to creating a pool of human resources to fit the changing needs through practice-oriented training with state-of-art facilities. Currently, the university offers 63 academic programmes through 19 departments under the school of Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Management and Sciences. The university also offers 11 programmes under its open and distance mode. With 3,300 students, 240 faculty members and 270 administrative and technical workers, the university today is a hub of quality activities in higher education and research,� he added.

Interacting with the mediapersons, he also said that the awards is a great honour to those martyrs who sacrificed their leaves during the Assam agitation as the university is an outcome of the movement of self-determination of the Assamese people. Expressing his gratitude towards the committed service from all concerned, the vice-chancellor also said that he had joined the university with a vision of making it a world class institution and worked day and night.

�Today we have achieved that result,� he said, adding that the Central Government-sponsored university is being able to provide skilled education thereby even attracting the foreign students. On the other hand, Dr L Boral, Controller of Examination, Tezpur University, disclosing about new courses introduced in the university said that for the academic session that normally starts during July will provide seven more new courses including two-year BEd in the department of education, MA in Communication for Development in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Master in Travel and Tourism Management in the Department of Business Administration, Diploma in Child Rights and Governance sponsored by Unicef in the Centre for Inclusive Development (CID), BVoc in Food Processing, BVoc in Renewable Energy Management under Community College Scheme, and diploma in Paralegal Practice.

Registrar of the university, Dr Birendra Kumar Das, taking about the outreach programme conducted by the university besides academic activities, said that till date a good deal of welfare works have been executed taking few villages, including Amula Pam, Napam and Jawani as model village and in the days to come, five other new villages will be taken for such welfare activities.
