GUWAHATI, Dec 23 � Police arrested five persons, including a police constable of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and a city-based businessman, in connection with the theft of a truck laden with 20 tonnes of iron material.
The truck was stolen on November 27 following which a case was registered with the Basistha police station (case number 769/12 under Section 392 IPC).
The team of crime branch and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the division concerned were entrusted with the investigation of the case.
Those arrested have been identified as Md Tahidur Rahman (22), Ram Narayan Ray (45), Wahidur Rahman (24), constable Sadek Ali (37) and Alen Ahmed (48), Senior Superintendent of Police (City) AP Tiwari said.
Tiwari said that the racket was operating in and around the city for the last many months and behind a number of identical cases of theft.
On the role of the police constable Sadek Ali, Tiwari said that he was the facilitator of the deal and the businessman Alen Ahmed used to buy them at low rates.
�A long chain was involved and all of them have been brought to book,� Tiwari said, adding that the recovery was made under the Basistha police station.
