AGARTALA, Jan 1 � The Srinagar border haat (market) in South Tripura�s Sabroom subdivision would be inaugurated on January 13 next, with Union Minister for Trade and Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman arriving here to witness the mega event.
The Ministry of Commerce has already asked the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFI) to issue notification for operationalizing the border haat at Srinagar (India) beween Purbamadhugram and Choygharia (Bangladesh).
The Ministry of Commerce has already requested the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to seek the convenience of Bangladesh Commerce Minister to jointly flagging off the border haat at Srinagar.
Construction of the border haat has been completed about three months ago with the Union Minister for Commerce failing to give a convenient date for the inaugural function of the first-ever border haat in Tripura.
The border haat which has been set up at Srinagar at a cost of Rs. 2.57 crore, will be beneficial for 5000 people living in Poangbari RD Block of the state�s southernmost subdivision.
The border haat of the state has been set up on a plot spreading over 37.5 sq meter in Indian soil and similar plot in Bangladesh land. Altogether 50 persons (25 each from two sides) will be eligible to sale their products at the border haats.
The Srinagar border is the second common market place in North-East after Kalaichar in Meghalaya�s West Garo Hills.
People living within a distance of 5 km of the border haat are allowed to sale goods in the border haat. People engaged in bilateral trade expect the border haat will boost border trade at Sabroom.
Construction of another border haat at Kamalasagar is in full swing. An administrative team headed by Addl DM Dilip Chakma has already held meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart in Sylhet district to review the progress of the proposed border haat.
