By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Dec, 24 - For the first time, Tripura has won 13 awards under various categories for successful implementation of MGNREGA, the flagship programme under the Ministry of Rural Development, for 2018-19.

The State secured the first rank for good governance initiative under the hilly states category, while it finished second for work completion rate under the same category.

In the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the State got the first rank in the category of number of houses completed in Group-1 (North Eastern States, Union Territories and Himalayan States).

Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma today said the State has received 13 awards in the rural development sector, especially in the rural job generation programme.

When the new Government took over office last year, the MRNREGA works were discontinued due to adverse reports. After a lot of persuasion, the Centre resumed the process of releasing funds for the job generation scheme. Today, we have achieved a milestone, he said.

An average of 44 mandays have already been generated, while an average of 46 mandays had been generated in 2017-18. If everything falls into place, the average mandays may go up to 65, which could be a record in recent years, he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister further said the State Government has been trying to make the MGNREGA a tool of socio-economic development. In the previous Left rule in the State, the MGNREGA was used as a political tool, but the BJP-IPFT Government will use it to strengthen poor people, he added.
