Tripura wants ASI office

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, May 24 - Tripura Tourism department is planning to raise a demand to shift the office of Superintendent of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) from Aizawl to Agartala.

The logic behind the demand is simple Mizoram has only one Archeological site while Tripura has a lot of Archeological sites Unakoti, Bhubanewari Temple, Matabari, Gunabati Temple and Buddha Stupa at Melagarh.

Earlier, ASI used to monitor or execute works at Archeological sites in Mizoram and Tripura from Guwahati region office. Recently, ASI has set up an office at Aizawl which is a short-sighted decision, according to officials of Tourism department here.

We will raise the demand to shift ASIs Aizawl office to Agartala for better upkeeping of Archeological sites which are in dire need to ensure proper attention, said a senior officer of Tourism department here recently.

Citing example how works are getting delayed at Archeological sites, the officials said an amount of Rs 1.13 crore was handed over to ASI during 2009-10 for renovation of Unakoti, one of the treasures of States Archaeological works but no work has been done yet.

Of late, an official of ASI visited the State and had talked with departmental officials on renovation works at Unakoti site. But works are yet to get started, he pointed out. Tourism department could not undertake any work at Unakoti site as ASI had already taken it up for its custody, he added.

According to the officials, several antique idols have already been stolen from Unakoti archaeological site. Besides, the condition of the site is dilapidated due to lack of proper care. If immediate attention is not given then it will be disastrous not only for Tripura but also for the nation. We want ASI to undertake works there at the earliest keeping in mind Unakotis national importance, he added.
