Tripura to get IIIT

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Jan 13 The Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has assured that Tripura will have an elite institute Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).

The Union Minister told me that the Central Government would take necessary steps to ensure setting up an IIIT in Tripura during the 12th Five Year Plan period, said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar here on Wednesday night.

Talking to reporters at Civil Secretariat after seeing off Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Union HRD Minister, Sarkar said that one meeting was scheduled with Sibal but he could not make it due to busy schedule.

At Airport, I had words with the Union HRD Minister who gave assured me that the Centre would initiate process to set up IIIT, he said.

I requested the HRD Minister to give some relaxations in setting up the elite institute like IIIT considering the States backwardness. Many of the norms applicable for starting such an institute might prove tough for us, Sarkar said.

It is very significant and historic that Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujibar Rahaman, well known as father of Bangladesh nation landed here after 40 years of countrys successful liberation war. The visit will certainly have a long term benefit not only for Tripura but also for the entire Northeastern region, he said adding that people seemed to be upbeat after getting official recognition of their contribution to the Bangladesh Liberation in 1971.
