AGARTALA, Feb 5 - In a politically significant development, Tripura�s royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has filed a case in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, which is awaiting passage in the Rajya Sabha.
He termed the Bill as against the basic ethos and principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution and also against the vital interests of the people of the North East. Pradyot Kishore proclaimed his intention to fight against the Bill legally to protect the interests of the people of the North East, clarifying that his case was against people who had illegally infiltrated into the North East and are currently holding important public offices or elected posts in the Government.
The special leave petition (SLP) was filed on behalf of Pradyot Kishore by legal luminary and former minister Salman Khurshid and after admitting the case, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed the Central Government to probe the allegations made in Pradyot Kishore�s petition and submit a report to the apex court on the issue.
While filing the SLP on Monday, Pradyot Kishore was accompanied by senior tribal leader Bijay Kumar Hrangkhwal and Jagadish Debbarma, president and secretary respectively of the regional INPT and former rebel leader Ranjit Debbarma.
Pradyot Kishore, however, made it clear to the media that he had filed the SLP in his individual capacity and not as the leader of any political party.
He had filed another case earlier, demanding implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura along with Assam. That case is scheduled to be taken up by the apex court soon.
