By Prabir sil

AGARTALA, May 7 - Fifteen Congress leaders including former CLP leader Sudip Roy Barman and ex-YCC president Sushanta Chowdhury were suspended from the party amidst protests by a section of party supporters.

The action has been taken against the 15 party leaders for openly criticising Congress president Sonia Gandhi for having electoral alliance with CPM in West Bengal, according to a press communiqu issued by AICC general secretary V Narayanswami.

When PCC president Birajit Sinha was briefing the media inside Congress Bhavan here on Saturday, hundreds of Sudip Roy Barmans followers were agitating in front of the PCC headquarters.

The AICC has suspended Sudip Roy Barman and 14 other Youth Congress leaders for criticising the Congress high command for having electoral understanding with CPI (M). And the matter has also been referred to the disciplinary committee for further action, Sinha told the media persons.

He added that the AICC had served a show cause notice to Roy Barman on April 8 following a media report on February 17 where he had openly criticised the Congress leadership for striking a deal with CPM in West Bengal. In the reply to the notice, he denied the allegations.

Roy Barmans reply was found to be unsatisfactory and the AICC suspended him with the approval of the Congress president, he said.

Roy Barman had been deliberately and in a calculated manner lowering the prestige of the Congress party and carrying propaganda against the Congress leadership, he said.

Before the press conference ended, a big group of Roy Barmans followers entered the Congress Bhavan and started protesting the party decision leading to a chaotic situation.

Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
