Tripura CM seeks special assistance from Centre

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, March 19 - Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and sought his help to reverse the States fortune.

Currently, the State is reeling under severe financial crunch with a whopping liability of Rs 11,355.53 crore that was left behind by the erstwhile Left Front Government.

Besides, the State will require about Rs 1,459.51 crore annually to provide pay hike in line with the 7th CPC as promised in the partys election manifesto. And the promise was corroborated by the Prime Minister himself during the campaign for the 2018 Assembly elections.

The CM was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Barman, who holds the Finance portfolio.

It was understood that the Chief Minister placed a wish-list seeking an economic package before the Prime Minister for overall development of the State.

Of course, we want a package for the State to put things in the right direction because the State has already plunged into economic crisis, said a senior party functionary here.

Earlier, Deb was offered a rousing welcome by several Union ministers for the partys stunning victory by toppling the Marxist Government in Tripura, at the Parliament House. Deb also met President Ramnath Kovind.

Party spokesman Dr Ashok Sinha, however, declined to comment on the outcome of the meeting.

Meanwhile, BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav, who had played a key role in bringing the party to power in Tripura, would be arriving here on March 26 next. During the visit, Ram Madhav will hold a meeting with party MLAs.
