Tributes to litterateur Umesh Sarma

GUWAHATI, March 8 - Tributes were paid to the memory of Umesh Sarma, well-known Assamese short story writer, poet and columnist, at a function held at Sankardev Shishu Kunja, RG Baruah Road on Tuesday.

Kanak Chandra Sarma, former vice president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha chaired the session. The function, held synchronising with the 788th sitting of the Guwahati Alochana Chakra, was inaugurated by Sahityacharya Dr Pramode Chandra Bhattacharya.

Dr Bhattacharya, in his inaugural address, referred to the illustrious life of Umesh Sarma who was known to be a dedicated teacher and a relentless social activist.

Two books by Sarma titled Anubhabar Gadya and Prabandha Nichay were also released on the occasion by senior journalist DN Chakravartty.

Chakravartty, in his speech, analysed the message of the 28 articles contained in both the volumes. He said that Sarma who had a thorough study of Indian culture and her rich mythological endowments handed down the centuries and enriched by great poets like Kalidas and Bhababhuti, gave ample evidence of his scholastic excellence in his writings.

Earlier, Meena Devi, wife of the late Sarma and convener of the literary sitting, in her welcome speech, dwelt on the literary career and intellectual brilliance of Sarma.

Kabindra Goswami, Khanindra Chandra Das, poet Rajendra Bardoloi, Kanak Chandra Sarma and Prahlad Sankar Bhagawati recalled the many-faceted genius of Sarma and described him as a very sincere social worker.
