Tributes paid to Dr Bhupen Hazarika

UDALGURI, Aug 9 - Along with other parts of the State, floral tributes were paid to Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika here at Udalguri Sahitya Sabha Bhawan premises on Thursday evening by the Udalguri district administration, Udalguri Sahitya Sabha and the local public.

The programme was held on the occasion of presentation of the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award (posthumously) by the Government of India on Thursday in New Delhi to the legend along with two other dignitaries � Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously) and former President of India Pranab Mukherjee. It may be added here that the award was received by cultural icon�s son Tej Hazarika at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Addressing the congregation, Dilip Kumar Das, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district expressed satisfaction and happiness over conferring of the highest civilian award to the Sudhakantha who glorified Assam and the rest of the country.

The programme was arranged here at Udalguri by the Udalguri district administration in association with the Udalguri Sahitya Sabha. Students Chandamita Bayan, Jushmita Kalita, project director of Udalguri DRDA Pranjit Kumar Wary, Superintendent of Police of Udalguri district Longnit Terang, teacher Madhu Patowary and DC office senior employee Bibek Das enthralled the congregation on the occasion by their performances.

Earlier, Dilip Kumar Das, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district initiated the paying of floral tributes to the icon. The programme was anchored by Ajay Kalita, secretary of Udalguri Sahitya Sabha where representatives of AASU, AJYCP, Udalguri Chamber of Commerce etc., were present.
