Tribune Sports Club pays tribute to RG

GUWAHATI, July 15 - The Assam Tribune Sports Club today organised a tribute-paying ceremony on the occasion of the death anniversary of Singhapurush RG Baruah.

Senior journalist and sports organiser Pranay Bordoloi was the chief guest.

In his speech, Bordoloi laid emphasis on the importance of sports in the life of every individual.

�Irrespective of our age and occupation, we should keep at least half an hour of our daily routine for some kind of sports and exercise. Sports activities are necessary for keeping the mind alert and the body active,� he said while sharing a number of inspirational stories on the importance of exercise for both young and old.

�I will be happy to help if the Assam Tribune Sports Club organises trekking expeditions in Guwahati or other parts of the North East,� he said, while sharing the experience of his own Everest expedition.

Remembering RG Baruah�s contributions in the field of sports and other fields, Hiranya Kumar Barman, president of the sports club, spoke about a number of activities taken up by the club, including a State-level art competition, anti-tobacco campaign and a number of sports activities. The club�s librarian Samindra Deka explained the objective of the meeting.

The club also took a proposal to approach the State Education department for inclusion of a chapter on the life and ideologies of RG Baruah in the school textbooks of Assam.

Prizes distributed: The prizes of the singles and doubles carrom competitions and the auction bridge competition, held recently among Tribune employees, were distributed in the same function. Bipul Das had won the carrom singles event and the pair comprising him and Bipul Sarma emerged winners of the doubles competition. Debashish Bezbaruah and Champakmoni Hazarika were the runners-up in the carrom doubles event. Jiten Kalita and Amal Bhoumik had won the auction bridge with Rajen Rajbongshi and Lohit Kalita finishing as runners-up.

Assam Tribune Employees Union general secretary Jiten Kalita, writer Pranita Sarma and artist-cartoonist of the Tribune group Champak Barbara, among others, spoke on the occasion.
