Tribune, News Live win media cricket matches

GUWAHATI, Jan 20 � Assam Tribune and News Live won their respective matches on the opening day of the TG Baruah Memorial Inter Media T20 Cricket Tournament.

At the Judges� Field here today, Assam Tribune edged past Photo Journalists by six wickets while, News Live got the better of News Times Assam by five wickets.

In the inaugural encounter, put into bat, the lensmen managed to score 93 for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 15 overs and in reply the Tribune batsmen reached the target with two balls to spare losing four wickets.

For the Photo Journalists team, Rituraj Konwar top scored with 40-ball 35 while Niloy Bhatta added 19. Dasarath Deka was the other notable contributor with 13. Buoyed by the disciplined bowling, the Tribune bowlers restricted the opponent to a moderate total.

But after a disastrous beginning, the Assam Tribune batsmen took their team to the target with some decent batting. Man-of-the-match Hiren Nath�s 43 off 30 balls and Champak Moni Hazarika�s unbeaten 29-ball 27 virtually enabled the Tribune team in reaching the target.

For Tribune, Amoresh Singha took three wickets giving away 20 runs while Dasarath Deka removed two Tribune scalps.

In the day�s second match, News Times Assam were all out for 93 in 14.3 overs with Kaushik Bortamuly (21), Udiptya Bhuyan (13), Syamanta Das (12) being the notable contributors. Pranjal Phukan was the leading wicket-taker for News Live with three wickets while Nagojyoti Gohain and Bipupan Mahanta took two wickets each.

Chasing the target, the News Live team hit the winning run in 11.2 runs. Sunil Bora was the top scorer with 21 while Bhaskar Hazarika added 15. Kaustavmoni Kakati and Syamanta Das took two wickets each.

Earlier, the championship was formally inaugurated by the Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Altogether 16 teams are taking part in the knock-out tournament.
